SEPTEMBER SPEAKER

Paul Oliver

Expert Advice for Backyard Birders and Nature Lovers

Paul Oliver is the founder of Urban Nature Store, Canada’s go-to destination for backyard birders, wildlife watchers, and anyone who has ever tried (and failed) to outsmart a squirrel. With a lifelong passion for birds and urban wildlife, Paul has built a business—and a community—centered on helping people connect with nature right in their own backyards.

Whether he is advising customers on the best seed to attract finches or designing bird-friendly spaces for urban settings, Paul brings a practical, engaging, and often humorous approach to conservation at home. He believes that even the smallest patch of green can make a big difference—for birds and people alike.

Paul’s presentations combine expert advice with real-world tips, delivered with the warmth and enthusiasm of someone who genuinely loves what he does (and doesn’t mind cleaning birdbaths on weekends).

Urban Nature Store is a proudly Canadian-owned retailer dedicated to serving both passionate birding enthusiasts and those just discovering the joy of backyard birding. Through our online store at UrbanNatureStore.ca and nine retail locations across Ontario — including our local Pickering store at 609 Kingston Rd – just west of Whites Rd and our Oshawa store at 370 Taunton Rd East — we offer a wide range of quality bird feeders, seed, optics, and nature-inspired gifts to help Canadians connect with the natural world around them.

              Sharing Our Recipes
              Ang's Creamy Tortellini Soup
              Courtesy of Patricia Bolger

What can we do with all the fresh vegetables in our gardens? Here is a recipe for “Ang’s Creamy Tortellini Soup” from www.pinchofyum.com that “The Big Guy” and I have made over the years.  He has written “Awesome!!!” on my recipe (in CAPITALS and with exclamation marks!!) so I know it is one of the WINNERS. At this point in the summer, you can add any vegetables that are within reach to augment and bulk up the soup. It is really the combination of aromatic spices and the white wine that supports the fabulous taste. Now, there he is, pouting again whenever I use wine in my recipes!!

Whenever I have leftover soup with pasta in it, the pasta becomes so bloated by the next day and is not half as tasty. I have thought about this and I have included directions to divide the broth at the end of Step 3 so you only finish the amount of soup that you need for the number of people you are serving that day. Store the jar in the refrigerator to be used another day. Adjust the ingredients in Step 4 accordingly and you can make this soup fresh every time!
