NOVEMBER SPEAKER Dr. Amy Barron |
|
The Dawn of Writing in the Ancient World How did mankind first learn to record his thoughts in writing? And why? These are some of the questions we will look at in this whirlwind tour through 4000 years of history as people of the Middle East developed the first forms of communication. Join us as we travel from clay tokens to Mesopotamian cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphics, and eventually, thank goodness, the alphabet that we use today. Something to think about next time you sit down with a good book, or perhaps an e-reading tablet that is not so different than our ancient ancestors. Amy Barron received her PhD at the University of Toronto in the field of Mesopotamian history and archaeology, specializing in the military history of Iron Age Assyria. She has excavated predominantly in the Middle East but has travelled widely studying the archaeology of various remote parts of the world from Peru to China. Amy has taught archaeology, ancient history and classics at the universities of Toronto and Guelph and currently leads the post-graduate museum studies programs at Fleming College. She has worked in the museum world for over 30 years and loves sharing her passion for the past. |

Sharing Our Recipes |
Everyone has a Carrot Cake recipe that has been handed down through the family and shows up at all the festive days. This is the best Carrot Cake recipe from my family and the easiest one to make that has ever come out of my kitchen. It is a large cake that will feed a quite a crowd. “The Big Guy” is a superfan when I put the cream cheese icing on the top. He has grown a “long sweet tooth” that has a voracious appetite! He’ll be just in time for his Halloween costume! For the complete recipe Click here. |
